MSF In San Diego: 3/30/19
What a Trip!
It’s 2:30am and we are departing San Francisco in a big and comfy Mercedes Benz Sprinter van. We have all our people and excited to kick off the 2019 San Francisco Giants baseball season in sunny San Diego.
We had a few stops along the way, making time for some coffee and egg McMuffins; can never go wrong with egg McMuffins. We were making great time through the Grape Vine, into Los Angeles and Orange County until we got to the now infamous Highway 5 sector around San Clemente. We hit BAD traffic, but all that extra time just meant we started our party earlier and started to play some Bay Area jams. Although Javi started to play 2000’s Cash Money hits; oh well, can;t win them all. It took us over 90 minutes to travel about 10 miles through that stretch until we got to the City and County of San Diego. I cannot express how awesome it was seeing sunny blue skies with a temperature in the mid 70’s. It felt great! Keep in mind, in the Bay Area, it felt like it has been raining nonstop sin December, so a break in weather was more than welcomed.
We parked our van in the lot and started the party! We took out our SF Giants flag and brought out the cooler, the music and good times. We tailgated for a good while until it was time to hit up our first stop: El Chingon Mexican Bar & Restaurant. We were looking forward to this spot because their claim to fame are these huge micheladas, and they did not disappoint! While we enjoyed our drinks and food, we received so much love form fellow Giants fans up and down the Gas Lamp; bunch of high fives, shout outs and simple head nods knowing that we came our here in full force.
Although some of us had been to Petco Park before, you cannot help but appreciate the beauty of this stadium and how it accurately represents the city of San Diego. The architecture, the weather, the breweries inside and the casualness of it all. As we sat in our seats, we had great views of the stadium and downtown San Diego that just reinforced our positive opinion of this stadium. The game got off to a start and to be honest, we knew the Giants were not going to be good this season as we would all hope for. There is a ton of changes with players, changes in philosophy, the last year of Bochy and a new front office to make personnel decisions; all of this combined equals an uncertain season. None the less, there’s always fan optimism. The game was very tight and the Giants got off to a lead. It was impressive considering we had a very difficult time scoring runs in the previous two games. This became a bullpen game with Reyes Moronta just coming up clutch! His performance, along with the entire bullpen managed to bring us our first win of the season. 1st WIN! We celebrated like we had just won 100 wins. And what better way to celebrate the win than with a fireworks show.
All in all. It was a great first trip, we had fun from start to finish, witnessed a great game, met great fans and celebrated with fireworks.
Best part: The Giants won their first game of the season. Cant wait until our next trip!
